Girl Rising is a documentary film that follows nine girls from around the world. They come from Haiti, Nepal, Ethiopia, India, Egypt, Peru, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, and Afghanistan. Each girl faces difficult barriers such as poverty, child marriage, limited education, and gender inequality. The film shows how education becomes a pathway to freedom, confidence, and opportunity.
Well-known writers and actors narrate each story, helping viewers emotionally connect with the girls’ journeys. The heart of the message is that when girls receive education, families, communities, and entire societies begin to change. The film highlights resilience, hope, identity, and courage.
* We are excited to announce special guests joining our Movie Club Discussion:
Members of the Harvard Alumni Contact of Haiti, and Christina Lowery, CEO of "Girl Rising".
Girl Rising was born from a powerful collaboration between filmmakers, journalists, writers—and girls themselves—to create the award-winning documentary, “Girl Rising.” As CEO, Christina leads the strategy and execution of Girl Rising’s expanding work around the globe. Central to this work are the production of new films and other media, the implementation of education programs, and engagement with public and private sector partners, media partners, educators, and grassroots supporters. Under Christina’s leadership, Girl Rising expanded its work across eight countries, collaborating with 40 global education partners and reaching more than seven million youth in 2022. She led the launch of Future Rising, focused on girls’ education as one of the most potent solutions to climate change.
